Radcliffe Tops Simmons In Strong Tennis Opener

The Radcliffe tennis team displayed potential for a fine season yesterday as it beat Simmons, 5-0, at the Radcliffe courts.

Meg Morgan led the sweep with a 6-0 6-0 win over Margie Sakzman at first singles. Joy Skon looked in midseason form at number two beating Pam Hayling, 6-1, 6-1 In third singles Aime Moss defeated Delana Cunning ham, 6-0, 6-3.

Terry Steiner and Kathy Day were invincible at first doubles as they cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Joyee Kramer and Gloria Davis. In the only real contest of the match the second doubles team of Penny Moorhead and captain Jackie Wolf turned back a come-from-behind bid by Maryanne Quelette and Nancy Finkel. 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

"This year's team is much stronger than last year's even though we have basically the same players." coach Jean Evans said. "The courts were ready on time this year we have two practices a week instead of one, and the weather has been good. It's all snowballed to produce much more enthusiasm than there was last year."

The Radcliffe victory came after only a week and a half of practice. Before vacation the team was allotted only two hours a week on the Palmer Dixon indoor counts.

Radcliffe will accompany the Harvard tennis team to Princeton for a Saturday match. Despite their strong showing against Simmons, the Cliffies will be definite underdogs. However, Radcliffe figures to fare much better against traditional rivals Wellesley and Pine Manor.
