UMass matched Harvard goal for goal yesterday on the Business School Field before the Crimson tallied twice at the end of the second four-minute overtime period to down the Redmen, 7-6, just as captain Rock Frisbie had predicted at halftime.
With only two minutes left in the overtime. UMass's Paul Ritch scored his fourth goal to put his team up, 6-5, just after Harvard goalie John Cosentino had made an incredible save on a shot by John Nagle standing right in front of him. The Crimson seemed to have lost.
Pass to Green
But only a few seconds later. Harvard's Bucky Hayes stole the ball near midfield and passed to Bobby Green, who fired a shot past goalie Dave Craw-ford.
Less than a minute later, ??yes picked up another loose ball in the UMass zone, and a series of passes got the ball to John Hagerty. Hage?y circled the cage and came out to Craw-ford's right before putting home the winner at 7: 15.
UMass was much better than Harvard expected. The visitors passing was sharper than in the past, they executed some nice cuts, and their defense was aggressive.
The game was even throughout, though UMass tallied twice in the first six minutes while the Crimson went almost a full quarter without a goal. Finally at 14:41, Green put the ball by the diving Crawford after scramble in front of the cage.
Phil Zuekerman, who is clearly the spark to the Crimson attack now that John Ince has graduated set up the tying goal with a feed to sophomore Steve Milliken, who beat Crawford. Harvard was starting to control play, but John Gannon put UMass ahead before Zuckerman evened the score after a beautiful dodge around John Walsh.
In the second half the Redmen tallied on two superb passing demonstrations, one of them a fast break. But after each one, Harvard retaliated with an unassisted goal, first by Zuckerman and then by Hagerty at 12:50 of the fourth period to send the game into overtime.
