Wrestling in the 118 pound weight division, Harvard freshman Dan Blakinger finished fourth in Saturday's National A. A. U. Wrestling Tournament in Tampa, Fla., to become the first Crimson individual to place in this meet since 1953.
This was the capping to an excellent season for the former Pennsylvania state champion, who in March won the ECAC freshman championship at 118 pounds. For this performance at West Point, N. Y., Blakinger was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet by the ECAC.
In the A. A. U. meet, the Lancaster, Panative swept through his first four matches before running into defending champion John Morley of the New York Athletic Club. Morley won a close decision over Blakinger and then went on to take the title. His victory helped the N. Y. A. C. take the team championship.
By placing in the meet, Blakinger has been invited to a summer wrestling camp from which U. S. representatives to the upcoming World Championship at Sophia, Bulgaria, will be chosen.
"I was terrifically pleased and very surprised at the way Dan did," Harvard coach John Lee said. "This really ends our season on a good note."
