Dartmouth Considers Coeducation

The Dartmouth College faculty yesterday recommended that the presently all-male school admit women by September, 1972. The Dartmouth trustees will meet for two days this weekend to discuss various coeducational plans.

A trustee committee studying coeducation will soon release a report proposing a three-to-one ratio of men to women. The report recommends that the college achieve this ratio by increasing total enrollment rather than significantly decreasing the number of men.

This can be accomplished without new construction by expanding the summer term program and increasing off-campus residency, the report says.

The Dartmouth faculty did not propose a specific plan at their meeting yesterday. A reporter for the Dartmouth, the college newspaper, said that the trustees will probably not pass a resolution for a set plan and date either at this weekend's session. "They will most likely just broadly support coeducation." he said.

The Board of Trustees will meet again in July and October. That would still leave time to institute coeducation by September 1972, the Dartmouth reporter said.
