Trackmen Compete in IC4A's Tonight

A portion of the Harvard track team will be competing today in the Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association of America meet at Princeton's Jadwin Gymnasium.

In one of two finals last night the Crimson's Ed Nosal took a disappointing third in the 35-pound weight with a throw of 60 feet even. Tom Sirois of Northeastern won the event with a toss of 62' 81/2" to continue the seesaw battle between the two Boston-area athletes.

In the other final last night, the long jump, Penn's Fred Samara won. Harvard did not enter a man.

"Nosal is the best chance we have of winning a first place." coach Bill McCurdy said Thursday.

"The IC4A's are limited to top-flight competitors," McCurdy added. "So it's not like our other meets."

Nosal is the only member of the Harvard squad competing in the field events. Shot putter Joe Naughton could have made the trip but McCurdy said he is bogged down in academic work.

Among the Harvard runners are Bailey Red in the 60-yard dash. Dewey Hickman in the hurdles. Bob Clayton in the 880, and Tom Spengler in the mile.

Dave Elliott could have competed in the 440 but he has a cold, while Jon Enscoe, also eligible, had academic commitments.

The Crimson will enter a mile relay team consisting of Chris Alvord. Dave Andeason, Rick Melvoin and Walter Johnson, Alvord is bypassing the 60-yard dash. Anderson the 400, and Johnson the bread jump and hurdles to run in the relay. "So we'll be blowing it all in the first race." McCurdy said.

The freshmen have entered a medley relay team, also.

There will be 15 final events today, with defending champion Villanova looking for its fifth straight title and 12th in 15 years. Penn seems to have the best chance of the Ivy League entrants.

The meet began late yesterday afternoon with heats in the 880, the mile the hurdles, and the relays. Semifinals in these events were held late last night.
