Starr Seeks Third Place In NCAA Wrestling Meet

After losing his quarter-final match yesterday, Harvard's 190-lb. Rich Starr won his first match in the consolation bracket to be assured of at least sixth place in the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Auburn, Ala.

Starr is scheduled for two matches tomorrow and a double victory would give him a third-place finish, Harvard's two other entrants, captain Pat Coleman and Mark Faller, along with all the other District I qualifiers; were eliminated on Thursday.

Starr and Princeton's heavyweight Chuck Dressel are the only Ivy Leaguers left in the competition.

In his quarter-final match against third seeded Vince Paolano of Syracuse, Starr lost a very tight 7-4 decision. Paolano advanced to the finals early last night with a 6-4 win over Colorado's Bill Bragg. His victory allowed Starr to compete in the consolation match at 11:30 p.m.

The Crimson grappler, who built up a 15-2-2 dual meet record this season, upset Oklahoma's Mike Brundage, 7-5, in the consolation. He will meet Bragg in the first match tomorrow. If Starr wins, he will be battling for third place preliminary to Paolano's championship bout with number one seeded Ben Peterson of Iowa State.

As a sophomore, Starr has advanced farther than any other Crimson wrestler in history. He was New Jersey State Champion in his senior year and finished his freshman campaign here last year with a 10-0 mark.
