The Mail SYMBOLIC PROTEST

By Richard Zorza

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

Many of those who are repulsed by the war in Vietnam and who demand an immediate withdrawal of all U. S. troops regard the "Counter Teach-In" as a challenge and insult to the anti-war peace forces of this community. Yet we do not feel that the way to further our cause is to prevent the South Vietnamese "ambassador" from speaking. To do so will only reinforce stereotypes of "crazy radicals." Yet silence tonight will be constued by the administration as support for its illegal and immoral war.

We would urge those who feel torn to make some other clear symbolic protest. Some may stand and turn their backs on the "ambassador," or wear all black to the meeting, others may wear red or white armbands, a few may wear costumes-storm troopers perhaps-and regard the whole event as theater.

It is important that Nixon's propagandists have the right to speak and make fools of themselves here. It is equally important that they are not deluded into thinking they have any support.Indo-China Teach-In Committee
