To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
I read Lanny Davis' recent letter comparing Senators McGovern and Muskie, and I feel compelled to make more of a point of the crucial difference between these two men.
While I am sure that Senator Muskie is quite sincere in his evolution to an anti-war position, I feel that the importance of McGovern's early and continued anti-war stand must be more strongly emphasized....
Our present situation in Vietnam is obviously largely attributable to a lack of foresight on the part of seemingly well-intentioned leaders. As Tom Wicker put it, we (and they) were fooling ourselves. And it seems that Senator McGovern was less fooled than the rest.
Today we must not only think in terms of escaping our present situation. We must also consider the new situation which may always be developing, and which is continually becoming more difficult to avoid. The type of person we need is not one who can only see what emergency steps are needed when the emergency arises. We need a person with a basic commitment against such atrocities as aggression and war, and the foresight to avoid them.
Of the candidates presently available, from the record. Senator McGovern has shown these capabilities.
