Freshmen Wrestlers End Year, 7-3

Harvard's freshman wrestling team completed its season with a final record of 7-3 and freshman coach Bob Fehrs expects several team members, especially those in the lower weight classes, to move up to next year's varsity squad.

"We had a small and relatively inexpensive team," Fehrs said. "so our victories were the result of everyone's hard work. I expect a couple of these fellows to help the varsity next year."

Strong Start

Starting the year very strong, the freshman team reeled off seven straight victories. The winning streak included resounding victories over Wesleyan (34-3) and Springfield (28-6). Hopes for an undefeated season were ended by a close loss to Rutgers J. V. team (16-19), followed by crushing defeats at the hands of Princeton (10-27) and Yale (3-35).

For the first time in six years. Harvard, which is traditionally weak in the lower weight classes, can expect to have a strong threat at 118 pounds next year. Dan Blakinger compiled a brilliant individual record of 12-0 in competition in this division. Blakinger is a former Pennsylvania state wrestling champion.

Happy Season

"As far as this season is concerned." Blakinger said. "I'm happy with my performance and hopefully I'll do well in the Freshman Easterns in three weeks. I should make the varsity next year and I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more action then."

Fehrs also praised Ron McGuire and Dick Amster, McGuire, an able competitor in both the 126 and 134 weight classes, finished the season with eight victories. Amster may be able to work into a spot on next year's varsity team at 150 pounds, where the Crimson will be hit hard by graduation this June.

The season's final record came as a pleasant surprise to Fehrs. Without being able to field any competitors in the two heavier weight classes. Harvard was forced to forfeit these contests in every match and thereby started every meet at a ten point disadvantage.
