With its eye on the upcoming Eastern Championships, the Harvard fencing team concludes dual meet competition this week with three matches at the IAB, beginning with Dartmouth at 7 p. m. tonight.
The Dartmouth match is a recent addition to the Crimson schedule. Although Harvard was originally slated for a return match with M. I. T. tonight, Coach Edo Marion preferred to meet a new challenger rather than face M. I. T., which the Crimson had whipped earlier in the season, 19-8.
Dartmouth is just entering the intercollegiate fencing field this year after discontinuing the sport some years ago.
With an 8-4 season mark, Harvard should have little trouble with Dartmouth. "They just aren't in our class," Marion said.
Following tomorrow's match with Holy Cross and Saturday's with Yale, Harvard will travel to the Eastern Championships, which will be staged March 12 and 13 at West Point.
Marion has high hopes for his senior All Americans Tom Keller and Larry Cetrulo. The two Crimson veterans have been standouts all winter. Cetrulo has posted a 27-2 individual mark in the sabre, while in the foil, Keller has compiled a 25-3 record, with two bouts dropped to NYU's nationally top-ranked team. "Both Keller and Cetrulo are definitely All-Ivy Leaguers," Marion said.
As a team, Harvard will do well in the Eastern Championships. Marion predicted. "I hope for fourth or fifth and that will be good for us. We are a good team and should not lose to anyone," he said.
