The Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Geore B. Schlekat, resigned this weekend in a dispute with the Pennsylvania administration over the university's admissions policy.
According to sources at Pennsylvania, Schlekat promised to improve the overall academic standards of the entering freshman class when he took office four years ago.
Controversial
Since then, however, Schlekat's office has stressed "diversity of background rather than academic excellence" in accepting freshmen. As a result, the average SAT scores of Penn entrants has shown an annual decrease over the last three years, which drew considerable criticism from many members of the Pennsylvania faculty.
