Nosal Takes Fifth in Shot At NCAA Meet in Detroit

Ed Nosal was the only member of the track team to place in the NCAA national championships this weekend at Detroit's Cobo Hall. The meet marked the end of the Crimson's indoor season.

Nosal, defending champion in the 35-pound weight, took fifth place in the event Friday afternoon with a throw of 61-7 1/2". Ken Shatterman of Kent State won the event and set a new national collegiate record with a throw of 68' 10 1/2".

The Crimson contingent of Nosal, Dewey Hickman, Tom Spengler, Jon Enscoe and assistant coach Ed Stowell was hamstrung by sickness. All but Nosal contracted colds.

Spengler and Enscoe were slated to run in the mile, but only Spengler was healthy enough to compete. He lost in the semi-finals late Friday night, nunning third in his heat with a time of 4:07.7.

Best Time

Hickman equalled his best time of the year in the hurdles with a 7.4-second performance. He, too, however, ran third in his heat and lost in the quarterfinals. Marcus Walker of Colorado won with a time of 7.0.

The Crimson finishes its season with a meet record of seven wins against only one loss. In addition, the thinclads won the Greater Boston championships and placed second in the Heptagonals.

"It's a pretty good season," Stowell said, "but it's not quite up to what we like, Still, over the years, if you can have a record like that, you're not doing too badly.

"We're looking forward to an indoor season which we hope will be better than the outdoor season," he added.
