"In my thirty-five years at the Garden, I have never seen a woman in the press box," said a silver-haired guard at the Boston Garden. "Our policy has always been that women weren't allowed to sit with the press because they might distract them, the guard said.
But last night a woman sat with the press-In seat number one with five chairs between her and 30 other reporters. The seating was assigned but there is no evidence segregation was deliberate.
The CRIMSON reporter decided to test the Garden's policy after a woman reporting for WHRB was not allowed in the press box at Yale's Ingalls Rink last Saturday. WHRB had been given three seats, but a guard said they could use another seat when they told him they had another crew member. When he saw that the other person was a girl, the guard refused to let her in, until WHRB reporters complained to Yale's Sports Information Office.
