Classes remain closed indefinitely at the University of Puerto Rico, where two policemen and one student were killed in a disturbance last Thursday.

The deaths came when a police riot squad appeared to disperse a confrontation between members of the Reserve Officers Training Corps and two student groups.

Riot police were called to the campus by university chancellor Pedro Jose Rivera, when campus police were unable to half fighting and rock-throwing.

Major Juan Mereado, the commander of the riot squad, and Sgt. Miguel Rosario were shot as riot police surrounded the university student center. A lieutenant of the riot squad said that the shots came from a sniper hidden behind a statue in front of the building. Jacinto Guiterrez, R. O. T. C. sergeant, was also killed.

A similar clash between pro-and anti-R. O. T. C. factions a year ago resulted in the death of a woman student. A student referendum conducted after the riot favored the abolition of R. O. T. C. The R. O. T. C. company however, continues to exist while a university committee studies the problem.
