The Quincy House squash team defeated Eliot, 3-2, Monday night to win the "A" league championship. Both teams entered this final match even, with two losses apiece. Quincy's depth proved crucial as Bob Gannett, Randy Smith and Dan Hrdy, playing at three through five, all won close matches.
Charlie Hecksher and John Donaldson were the winners for Eliot at one and two.
Quincy athletic secretary Rick Barton said of the victory, "It's always a pleasure to beat John Powers (Eliot's athletic secretary). Our last confrontation with him was for the "B" basketball championship. We won in triple overtime with Powers standing on the sidelines."
Barton also had some remarks about the attitudes of his opponents. "Houses like Quincy, Lowell and Adams have the appropriate amateur zeal," he said. However, he feels that Mather and Winthrop both take intramural sports too seriously.
Serious Eliot was so emotionally shaken by the loss to Quincy that the team went on to drop a match to Lowell on Wednesday.
