Sophomore Peter Briggs won the Foster Cup Squash trophy yesterday afternoon with a four game victory over Crimson captain Ed Atwood.
The first three games of the intra-team final were very close, each going to at least 14-12 at one point. But Briggs asserted himself in the final game and won handily, 15-4.
Atwood was up 10-6 in the first game but Briggs won the next six points. With the score 11-12 against him. Atwood admitted he carried a return and gave the final momentum to Briggs.
Briggs hit the tin six times in the second game, twice after being tied at 12-12, and dropped the game. But Briggs won a close 15-13 third game with a hard rail shot that brought a "Wow" from Atwood. The sophomore ran away with the final game.
Coach Jack Barnaby awarded cigars to the finalists. "Can I break training coach?" Briggs said. "I'm afraid I'll cough in public," Atwood commented.
