Fencers Test Judges Tonight in IAB After Derailing Spirited Engineers, 19-8

Preparing for tonight's 7 p.m. match against Brandeis in the IAB, the Crimson fencing team swept past a spirited M. I. T. squad, 19-8, last night by dominating the Engineers in all three weapons.

"M. I. T. came here psyched sky-high," Crimson epee ace Mick Irvings said. "They upset us last year and have been really snotty ever since, so we really wanted to shrink their heads tonight."

Coach Edo Marion's saber squad buried the Engineers, 8-1, as co-captain Larry Cetrulo's three victories paced the rout. All-American Cetrulo swept through the competition with only one touch against him; in his second bout disposed of his opponent by recording five touches in an amazing 22 seconds. He continued to be the winningest Crimson fencer and raised his season record to 23-2.

Harvard took the foil competition five bouts to four and notched six out of nine matches in the epee division. "My saber team is very weak, so I know we'd have to take them in the foil and beat them badly in the epee to make up for the saber." M. I. T. coach Edwin Richards said. "I'm not surprised it didn't work out."

In the foil, Harvard All-American Tom Keller took all three of his bouts and in the process improved his season's mark to 21-3. Perhaps the most exciting match of the night was Keller's first round bout against Guy Pommares, a swashbuckling Frenchman who started playing with swords at the age of 12.

Keller shot to a commanding 4-0 lead only to see Pommares fight back to a 4-4 tie. With no time left, Keller used his classic style to edge Pommares to the end of the strip before lunging for a touch to win the La Belle. Co-captain Irvings also won all three of his epee rounds.

"Tomorrow night won't be too much trouble, they're a good team but nothing special." Marion said referring to the Brandeis squad. "We're just in another league."
