PHILADELPHLA, Feb. 19-Midway through the first half. defending Ivy champion Penn ran up 11 straight points, and went on to rout the Crimson, 103-72, in the Palestra tonight.
Harvard held its own for nine minutes before Penn unleashed an impressive offensive attack. Leading 18-17, the Quakers slowed the Crimson running game and picked up its own to outscore Harvard, 30-7, for the remainder of the half.
"The first half was it," sophomore forward Floyd Lewis, who paced the Crimson with 22 points said after the game. "They were hot and we quit moving on our offensive pattern and quit hitting the boards."
When Harvard's running attack fell apart, everything else did too. A series of turnovers and fouls gave Penn more scoring opportunities-which it took advantage of.
"Our execution was good and we started moving to the basket," Penn head coach Dick Harder said after the game. "This was our biggest game of the season and we had to win it."
Penn's Corky Calhoun, playing the best game of his college career, was a major factor in the Quaker's 23rd straight Ivy win. He dominated the boards with 15 rebounds, and hit 10 of 17 from the floor and 8 of 10 from the line for 28 points-a career high.
During the second half, Penn didn't let up, and the Crimson, whose shooting percentage from the floor was a miserable 35 per cent for the game, couldn't stop it. Midway through the half, the Quakers stretched their lead to 37 points, 80-43.
"Sure we got killed. We stopped moving and Penn started running," Harvard head coach Bob Harrison said. "We just played poorly, but these kids will bounce back tomorrow and beat Princeton." he predicted.
The Crimson faces the Tigers tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at Jadwin Gym. Princeton, which defeated Dartmouth tonight, 97-81, is 5-4 in the Ivies.
