Five Tops Cornell, 80-60, For Seventh Straight Win

With its 80-60 triumph over Cornell in Ithaca on Saturday night, the Harvard basketball team set up a battle for first place in the Ivy League this Friday with Penn in Philadelphia.

"Our plans have worked out the way we hoped they would-we've won every game since we last played them," said Harvard head coach Bob Harrison yesterday. "And now we have to beat them or they might as well be crowned right there on Friday night," he said.

Besides setting up the Penn contest, Harvard's win over Cornell secured its hold on second place in the Ivy standings, and stretched its winning streak to seven games, six straight in the Ivy League-Harvard's longest Ivy winning streak ever.

Harvard's overall record is now 12-8. and its Ivy record is 7-1, equalling the Crimson's best League mark of seven victories in 1937. 1956. and 1957.

The Crimson got off to a good start against a weak Cornell squad on Saturday, but four straight Cornell lay-ups narrowed the Harvard lead to four points. The Crimson held on for a 36-31 half-time advantage.

The start of the second half began the way the first half ended, and Cornell went ahead by one point after four minutes. But then Harvard exploded with sophmore forward Floyd Lewls leading the way.

Lewis poured in 29 points, his best of fensive production to date. and grabbed 14 rebounds. He paces the Crimson in both scoring and rebounding for the season with 17 points per contest and 14 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard James Brown added 22 points against the Big Red to increase his season scoring average to 16.5 points per game.

Harvard's freshman basketball team, improving steadily as the season progresses. ran its way to a 93-64 victory over Chamberlayne Junior College Saturday night in the IAB. The freshmen's record is 7-5.

Center Tony Jenkins, who is averaging 27 points and 17.8 rebounds per game for the season, scored 26 points against Chamberlayne to pace the squad. Gaurd Ken Wolfe is the freshman team's other leading scorer with a 19.8 point average.
