Crimson Track Downs B.U., Looks Toward Army Meet

The Harvard indoor track team opened its season by trouncing Boston University, 83-35, on Tuesday night. Coach Bill McCurdy said the meet was "merely a warm-up" for the important meet against Army on Saturday.

McCurdy experimented with his runners to try to find the best combination of his talent. Harvard had only one double-winner, Ed Baskauskas, who won the pole vault and the high jump. B.U. also had a double-winner, Ford Dennis, who won the broad jump and the 60-yard dash, setting a new bubble record of 6.1 seconds.

The closest race of the night was the two-mile run, in which the Crimson took first and second places with John Quirk and Fred Linsk having times of 9:01 and 9:04, both very fast for early season. Linsk's time was 20 seconds better than his previous best time for the two-mile.

Other outstanding performances for Harvard were Dewy Hickman, who tied the bubble record in the 60-yard high hurdles with a time of 7.4 seconds; sophomore Jerry Hughes, who won the 35-pound throw and was second in the shot put; and Joe Naughton, who won the shot put.

Rick Rojas, Mike Koerner, and Jim Keefe swept the first three places in the mile-run. Leon Sharpe placed second in the broad jump, and Bill Birhle placed second in the high jump.

Look to the Army

"We're looking forward to Army, trying to sort out what happened last night, and seeing what coaching gems we can come up with to improve the team," McCurdy said.
