Harvard Thinclads Demolish Eagles

Harvard's track team demolished Boston College, 80-38, under the bubble last night. B.C. was able to stay close in the field events, but Harvard was the master in the running events, taking first place in all but one.

The meet began with B.C. sweeping the weight, 35-16. The Crimson did not even qualify a participant. Harvard swept the second event, the pole vault, with Jim Kleiger, Ed Baskauskas, and Dan Berg taking the first three places.

Harvard took the first two places in the shot put, as Joe Naughton, who was first, and Jay Hughes turned in their best performances of the season. In the high jump, William Birhle and Ed Baskauskas could only manage a tie for second place with 6'4" jumps. The mile, in which a Crimson sweep was predicted, proved to be a disappointment. Mike Koerner and Tom New took second and third places, and Rick Rojas did not place.

Harvard took both first and second places in the broad jump, the 60-yard high hurdles, and the two mile. The 60 yard dash was especially interesting since it matched two old high school rivals, Dewey Hickman of Harvard and John Bykowsky of B.C.

Bykowsky had never lost their duels until last night when Hickman tied his bubble record of 7.4 seconds in his victory over Bykowsky.

Leon Sharpe said that he had a "bad night," but he still won the broad jump. Bailey Reid, as usual, won the 60-yard dash, and Harvard ran away with both relays, the mile and the two mile.

The junior varsity thinclads almost had a shutout. They beat B.C. 99-7 while taking first place in every event and second in all but two.

"JV level went about as expected," said Coach Pappy Hunt. "They (B.C.) had nothing. Their school is not as fortunate as Harvard in the way they run their athletic program."

"All in all, it left a positive feeling." Coach Bill McCurdy said when he was asked about the meet. "I feel pretty much as I felt after the Army and Boston University meets. Bud Wilson is doing a hell of a job as captain. The team is showing a lot of spirit. Right now, I'm pleased with the total picture. The team really has a positive attitude."

Harvard's next meet is against Northeastern after Christmas.
