Makeshift Hockey Team Tops Eagles; McManama Nets Three in 6-4 Win

Despite the absence of eight regular players, a conglomeration of Harvard varsity and JV skaters played brilliantly last night, defeating Boston College, 6-4.

Harvard compensated for the loss of Billy Corkery, Larry Desmond, Dave Hynes, Harry Reynolds, Jay Riicy, Andy Burns, Doug Elliott and Mark Noonan--all benched for breaking curfew after the Army game--by forechecking extremely well and outscoring the Eagles 4-1 in the last two periods.

Bob McManama stood out for the Crimson, picking up a hat trick and an assist. His first goal put Harvard up, 1-0, at 7:59 of the first period after a rush and perfect centering pass from Tom Paul.

With Harvard a man down less than two minutes later, an unknown sophomore from the JV's, Sandy Milley, converted a pass from another JV skater, Fred Paul, to give the Crimson a 2-0 edge.

Harvard's makeshift defense, missing injured Kevin Hampe as well as Elliott, Burns and Noonan, collapsed at the end of the period as B.C. roared back with three quick goals. The Eagles' first line pressured Harvard goalie Joe Bertagna throughout the opening period, and Bertagna finally broke at 15:19 as Ed Kenty fed Scott Godfrey for an unstoppable goal.

Harvard's coverage in front of the net was sloppy for the next four minutes, and the Eagles capitalized with two goals. Bob Reardon was responsible for both, tying the game on a fast break and giving B.C. the lead on a garbage goal.

Harvard's defense tightened up for the rest of the game, allowing only five shots in the final two periods, while the Crimson forwards forechecked a very ragged B.C. defense into the ice.

The Eagles avoided a Harvard goal for almost 17 minutes of the second period, however, as Harvard blew numerous chances. McManama finally tied it up at 16:46, blasting home a 25 footer on a fast break. The reserves followed up a McManama goal once again at 18:26 on an excellent play by Dave Cavanagh. Cavanagh eluded a defenseman on a rush, hit JV star Craig Thomas out in front, and Thomas put Harvard back in front 4-3.

B.C. tied it up again on a somewhat flukey goal in the final seconds of the period, but the third period was all Harvard.

With less than two minutes gone, Bob Goodenow streaked down the right side and found McManama uncovered in front of the B.C. net. McManama finished off his hat trick, and Harvard led, 5-4. Three minutes later, Paul iced the game, scooping up a loose puck out in front and beating Higgins as the rest of the B.C. defense looked on.

Harvard outshot the Eagles, 42-16. Despite giving up four goals while making only 12 saves, Berating played well, coming up with several key saves in the first period.
