If Harvard fans check the statistics they will find that in the first two games played this year the freshman have scored a touchdown in the opening plays of the game. "We like to score in the first series of the game if we can. We did against Tufts and Holy Cross. Against Dartmouth, we had a receiver in scoring position but the pass was overthrown," offensive coach Loyal Park said.
Park believes that these statistics indicate that the freshmen are adapting very well to the wide-open style of football used by the varsity. "The guys are adapting very well simply because they're learning everything from scratch this year. They don't have any old habits of play to break." "We now use the complete basic offense that the varsity uses. I believe the freshmen are developing just as coach Restic expected," Park added.
The Yardlings have been doing their homework this fall for they have reached the midway point of the season with a 2-1 record. The freshmen hosted Tufts in early October and began the season successfully with a 39-14 victory.
The following week, Harvard came up against Holy Cross, and the Crimson blasted the Crusaders, 53-0, in what was termed an "aerial circus."
"Since Tufts was our first game, we wanted to see what would work. Fortunately, everything did. When we played Holy Cross, we went to the air and we just couldn't miss," Park said.
The real test, however, came when the Crimson traveled to Dartmouth for their first away game. Dartmouth's superior speed and size proved too much for the Yardlings, who were beset with injuries. Dartmouth upended Harvard 41-18.
The bus ride back from Hanover was a long one. "I'm very proud that the team didn't give up when it would have been very easy to do so. These guys have a lot of character and I know they'll be ready for the next game," noted Park.
The next encounter is against Princeton today. "We will probably open up more and get more motion in the back field. Coach Restic wants to throw football, so that's what we're doing." Park said.
Without a game last weekend, the freshmen have had an extra week to prepare themselves for the three remaining games of the season against Princeton, Brown and Yale.
The freshmen will host Princeton at 10:30 a.m. today at Soldier's Field.
