Harvard Grad Makes Bid For Senate Seat

George Sommaripa '51 announced his candidacy yesterday for the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat currently held by Senator Edward Brooke (D.-Mass.).

Sommaripa--who managed the Thomas Boylston Adams '31 campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1966--accused Brooke yesterday of being "a very clever man just fooling around with the big issues." He said. "You have to lead and that's just what I can do."

The chief issue of his campaign will be the level of government military expenditure, Sommaripa said. He proposes cutting defense spending by a third for three years, reducing the defense budget from "$100 billion to $25 billion."

The money cut from the budget "should be put back into the hands of the people." Sommaripa said. He added that "the strongest thing about the U.S. is our market economy. If we continually rely on the government, we're not going to go anywhere."

Fundamentalist

Sommaripa called himself a "fundamentalist" and said the country needs "a more equitable distribution of income." He suggested a tax program which would require an individual to pay 50 cents on every dollar of income about $10,000. Individuals with incomes of less than $10,000 would receive 50 cents from the government on each dollar that their income fell below the $10,000 level.

The Administration's wage and price controls. Sommaripa said, "are only putting off the problem. Nixon's game plan is bound to lose."
