Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia Still in Race for League Title

There could have been a six-way tie for first place in the Ivy League after Saturday's action. Instead, only three teams still have a shot at the championship after the weekend's play.

Dartmouth's win over the Crimson left the Indians tied for the Ivy lead with Cornell, which crunched Yale behind guess who's running, 31-10. Both teams are still undefeated on the year and stand 3-0 in league play.

Columbia stands 2-1 and is the only other team among the Ivies with less than two losses after the first three weeks of league play. With two teams still undefeated, two losses can be considered the "elimination point" for league hopefuls.

Cornell Still Tops

Cornell maintained its image as the top team in the league by virtue of its victory in the Yale Bowl on Saturday. The Bulldogs had held Ed Marinaro to a total of 92 yards in his first varsity performance against them. But Heisman Trophy candidate Marinaro was too much for the Elis last weekend, rushing for 230 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

Marinaro now has a career total of 3.860 yards, only seven short of Steve Owens' NCAA record.

Hank Bjorklund, another of the Ivy's stock of fine running backs, had a big afternoon Saturday, as Princeton ripped Penn, 31-0. Bjorklund ran for one touchdown, passed for another, and gained 129 yards against the helpless Quakers. Bjorklund's yardage gave him 2.039 for his career, breaking Heisman Trophy Winner Dick Kazmaier's Princeton rushing record set in 1951.

Columbia Still Hopeful

An extra point decided yet another for Columbia, as the Lions got by Rutgers, 17-16, Saturday. Columbia had already lost to Harvard and beat Princeton on conversion attempts. The Lions managed to block a fourth-quarter point-after kick to provide the slim margin.

Brown still hasn't won a game this season. The Bruins went down to defeat at the hands of Colgate in a high-scoring affair, 42-32.

Columbia plays at Cornell in the Ivy's main attraction this Saturday. A Lion loss would end their hopes for the league title. Other games include Brown at Princeton, and Yale at Dartmouth. The Crimson, now 2-3 after two straight losses, will be trying to get back on the winning track against Penn in Philadelphia.
