Dartmouth has named Jake Crouthamel, defensive coach for the now-departed Bob Blackman to succeed Blackman as head coach of the football team. Crouthamel, 32, thus becomes the youngest head coach in Ivy League history.
The announcement came at noon yesterday at the Marriott Hotel in Newton during a press conference.
The selection will reportedly come as somewhat of a surprise to Blackman, who had planned to take his entire staff with him to the University of Illinois. Crouthamel apparently tried to contact Blackman in Hawaii but had no success.
Dartmouth had decided last week to offer the head job to Boston College coach Joe Yukica, but Yukica felt that B.C.'s offer was more attractive. Dartmouth's committee then had to reconvene and find someone else.
Crouthamel, who will be one of three new head coaches in the league next fall, started every game at halfback for Dartmouth from 1957 to 1959 and became the leading ground gainer in the college's history.
