Pusey Meets With Nixon; Students, Faculty to Lobby

By Michael E. Kinsley

Several hundred Harvard Faculty members, students, and employees are in Washington, D.C., today meeting with Senators and Congressmen to lobby for anti-war legislation. Meanwhile 13 senior Faculty members are meeting with Cabinet-level presidential advisors in an attempt to convince them to change the course of the war.

President Pusey and eight other university presidents met with President Nixon for an hour and a half yesterday morning.

In a joint statement yesterday, the presidents said they met with Nixon to "present explicitly our assessment of the desires, frustrations and anger among students and faculty across the nation- reactions that result from developments in Southeast Asia, hostile comments by members of the administration about campus events and persons, and the tragic incidents that have occurred on several campuses." The complete statement is reprinted on page eight of today's CRIMSON.

Buses from Cambridge

Eight buses left Freedom Square in Cambridge for Washington at 9 p.m. last night. The group, calling itself "Peace Action Strike," is led by Everett I. Mendelsohn, professor of the History of Science.

The site for Saturday's demonstration is still in dispute. New Mobe representatives, who expect 30,000 war protesters, have demanded access to Lafayette Park, directly in front of the White House. But government authorities have insisted upon cordoning off the park area and have offered instead the Washington Monument grounds, three blocks in back of the White House.

David Dellinger said today that at least six Congressmen- whom he has not named- will be in the front ranks of Saturday's demonstrators. He said they will march in front of the WhiteHouse even if they do not get a permit.

Meanwhile, government authorities have called in 1800 D.C. National Guardsmen for special training sessions this weekend. Municipal authorities have cancelled all leaves of absence for the 4000 manned D.C. police force.

Harvard 'Lobby'

The group of 13 senior Faculty members are all men with connections in Washington. Many were advisors to advisors to previous administrations. They include Dean May and professors Francis M. Bator. Edwin O. Reischauer, Richard E. Neustadt, George B. Kistiakowsky, Seymour Martin Lipset, William M. Capron. Michael Walzer, Adam Yarmolinsky '43, Gerald Holton, Conrad Bloch, Thomas Schelling, and Edward M. Purcell.

They will meet with presidential advisor Henry Kissinger, Undersecretary of State Eliot Richardson, possibly Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird and Secretary of State William Rogers, and a long list of Senators and Congresmen.
