Nationwide Strike Spreads Rapidly As University Activity Shuts Down

Over 166 universities and colleges and six high schools have joined the nationwide strike to protest the war in Southeast Asia, National Strike headquarters at Brandeis announced late last night.

At Harvard, students, Faculty and employees met in the Houses and small gatherings to choose representatives to the Strike Steering Committee and formulate separate demands.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences informally passed two resolutions "deploring" the expansion of the war in Southeast Asia and urging immediate withdrawal of American troops. At the same time, however, the Faculty refused to support all four of the Harvard strike demands.

During the regularly scheduled Faculty meeting, Dean Dunlop read a directive explaining procedures for altering normal University activities to allow for students interested in working against the war. Students wishing to postpone final examinations must file a make-up petition before May 15.

President Pusey also issued a statement urging University personnel to make accommodations for anyone who postpones his work for conscience-related acts.

The Boston University Council of deans and vice presidents yesterday cancelled exams and commencement and ordered students to evacuate university dormitories by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Despite the order, 4000 B.U. students voted last night to remain on campus and fight for their three strike demands.
