Student Anti-War Protest Lessens, But David and Julie Won't Return

One hundred forty-nine striking schools have now resumed normal operations but the strike remains in force at 267 universities across the United States.

Strike activity at most of the schools has remained peaceful but campus uneasiness has not entirely subsided. Students and police clashed on several campuses yesterday and Julie and David Eisenhower have decided to skip their graduation ceremonies to avoid the risk of insult and embarrassment.

At the University of Denver, National Guardsmen moved onto the campus while workmen demolished a shantytown built by anti-war protestors.

Woodstock Nation

The approximately 200 inhabitants of the commune, which they called "Woodstock Nation West," had evacuated before the troops arrived.

At Virginia Polytechnic Institute, police used dogs to evict more than 100 protestors from a building they had occupied overnight. The V.P.I. president said, "Anarchy must be dealt with," and then suspended all 104 and charged them with trespassing.

Michigan Gov. William Milliken declared a state of emergency in Ypsilanti after police informants discovered a "plot" to burn a ROTC building.

Nearly 2500 students at the University of Maine have volunteered to donate blood for servicemen in Vietnam. Anti-war protestors said the blood drive will demonstrate that their primary goal is to save lives.

At Washburn University in Topeka. Kan., plans were announced for a "College Appreciation Day" to express thanks for education. The Vermont Federation of Young College Republicans announced yesterday that they "totally oppose" the national student strike.

The Boston Record American reported yesterday that 167 high schools are on strike and that "freshman were seen leaving Harvard Yard in droves with packed bags."
