'Cliffe Freshmen Get Worst Deal In Coed Switch

Over half of the freshman Cliffies who had been told that they could move to Harvard next year will have to stay at Radcliffe instead.

Original plans called for 441 Radcliffe women-147 from each but this year's senior class-to live at Harvard next year. But after only 335 Harvard men applied to live at Radcliffe next year, 106 Cliffies had to be eliminated.

Radcliffe's student-faculty-administration Joint Committee, after meeting yesterday with the school's student Rooming Procedures Committee. decided to eliminate 86 freshmen. 10 sophomores, and 10 juniors from the list of Harvard-bound Cliffies.

Lower Cutoffs

The cutoff numbers for Harvard living in the room-assignment lottery in which all Radcliffe women participated earlier this month have been lowered accordingly for each class.

Mrs. Genevieve Austin, dean of residence at Radcliffe, last night cited two reasons for the large proportion of eliminated freshmen: "the tradition of class priority" and the fact that two of next year's five co-residential Harvard Houses will be closed to sophomore Cliffies for the next two years.

The reason that two Houses are being closed to Radcliffe sophomores, according to Lawrence F. Stevens, research assistant in the Office of Tests, is to make possible an annual rotation of co-residential Houses.

The co-residential Houses which are closed to sophomore Cliffies, Stevens said, will be co-residential again in 1971-72, but not in 1972-73. Cliffies will live in the other co-residential Houses at least through 1971-72.

House Assignments

The 335 Harvard-bound Cliffies will learn their House assignments by the middle of May. Each will then have the option of accepting her assignment or remaining at Radcliffe.

Harvard freshmen-who in the past have been told their assignments in early May-won't know this year until the end of the month.

The five co-residential Houses-Adams, Dunster, Lowell, Quincy, and Winthrop-will admit considerably fewer Harvardfreshmen than in the past. The four non-co-residential Houses will admit more than usual.

The 334 Harvard men now planning to live at Radcliffe next year-including 109 juniors, 161 sophomores, and 64 freshmen-will receive forms this week for selecting a House or dorm at the Cliffe.
