Harvard's lacrosse team must stop UMass' 15-game winning streak in order to win today, and it may have to do so without the help of goalie John Cosentino. The game is at 3 p. m. on the Business School field.
A doctor at Stillman Infirmary told Cosentino yesterday that he had a bad strain valnerable to rupture, but a physician at Dillon Fieldhouse said that there was nothing seriously wrong with him. Cosentino will not know for sure if he can play until he gets another check-up just before the game.
Lover's Nuts
"It feels like I've got a bad case of lover's nuts," Cosentino explained.
He incurred the injury while trying to push his car in order to jump start it early Sunday morning on Cape Cod. "My mother won the car in a contest," Cosentino said. "It's a Volvo and is supposed to last 11 years, but it only lasted 11 days." The car is still on Cape Cad.
If he does not play, the Crimson's lack of depth at the goalie position will be crucial. Brian Bandry, who shifted from defense this spring in order to back up Cosentino, is the only other goalie. But Cosentino said that Landry was "petrified" at the prospect of starting today.
"I'm pretty sure I'll play if I can walk," Cosentino said last night, "because Brian's at a bachelor party right now. I don't think he'll even wake up before 2 p. m. tomorrow."
If Cosentino cannot play, and if Landry does not wake up. Kirby Wilcox-the starting goalie two years ago-may start. "He once said that if Cosentino got hurt, he'd fill in," captain Bruce Regan said. Another possible replacement is midfielder Bucky Hayes, who had a dream earlier in the season about Cosentino's getting injured.
The Redmen have won all four games this season, and they were victorious in their final 11 games last spring. They are likely to be big, and they may be the first ones this season to match the Crimson in penalties.
Whoever is in the goal must help stop a powerful UMass attack led by Tom Malone, who has scored 16 goals and amassed 21 assists in only four games.
