Rugby Team Tops Newport In Hard-Hitting Encounter

While the Earth People were peacefully grooving last Sunday on Soldiers' Field, the Harvard and Newport rugby clubs were pounding each other in the mud.

Newport pounded harder, breaking the noses of two Harvard players, but Harvard pounded more effectively, winning 19-6.

Playing against a strong wind and unusually rough opponents, the Crimson had to come from behind to escape the first half with an 8-6 lead.

Erie Hendrickson, a former Yale rugged now at Harvard Law, started off the scoring to give the Crimson a 3-0 lead, but Newport retaliated with two goals.

Stymied until late in the half. Harvard finally recovered to lie it up at 6-6 as Ritch Hardy took a pass from Ed Banny ???? Joe Daly kicked the extra ??? and Harvard led ?-6.

With ?? ??? at its back. Harvard ????? Rhode Islanders 11-? in the ????? Newport gained a little re??? as Crimson players Gil Bettman and ??? were carried off the field with ??? and broken noses.

The ???? forced the Crimson to play two ??? short for the final 15 minutes of ????. There are no substitutes in rugby.

Game Already Lost

Newport had already lost the game by the time they knocked out the two Harvard players, however, and their victims were largely responsible for the defeat. Daly had booted a penalty kick and Bettman had fallen on a loose ball in the end-zone to put the game out of reach.

Hardy finished off the rout with an insurance ??? on a penalty kick late in the game.

Harvard meets Princeton next Saturday in the Farmington Cup at Hartford. Conn. The Schaefer Brewing Company will sponsor the game and provide post-game refreshments. The game will be televised in New England.

Captain Phil Ordway is confident about Harvard's chances against Princeton. "I think we can give Princeton a real good show." he said. Ordway, injured during the Ivy League Rugby Tournament at Providence last week, passed up Sunday's game to recover in time for the Princeton contest.

Last Saturday a team composed of freshmen and inexperienced players trounced the Boston Minutemen, a faction of the Boston Rugby Club. 18-3.

The first team returns home on May 16 with a game against the Business School.
