Newly-elected Cambridge Mayor Alfred Vellucci will open Cambridge Bicycling Week at noon today on the Cambridge Common, following a bike parade from City Hall.

The parade will take place despite the City Council's ban on most parades and gatherings. "The Council wanted us to go ahead," David Wilson, organizer of the event, said yesterday. "But the parade will be abbreviated, since we are afraid there might be some resentment that we are allowed to hold our event."

The program for the week includes the inauguration of a network of bikeways throughout Cambridge, the promulgation of safety information for bicyclists and motorists, the installment of bike-parking stands, and the sponsorship of a series of outings for riders.
