Despite Harvard's authoritative 6-2 hockey triumph at Yale two weekends ago, several Crimson players had been less than satisfied with their performances, and said as much on the bus back from New Haven.
"We let up." George McManama had said. "Next time we'll blow them off the ice."
Saturday afternoon at Boston Garden, as a hopeless and helpless Yale sextet tried to repeat last year's shocking 3-2 overtime upset. Harvard was as good as its word.
Blitzing the Eli net without respite and receiving superb performances from its goaltenders. Bruce Durno and Mike LoPresti. the Crimson poured in nine goals in the first forty minutes of the game, then held off the Bulldogs in the final period to wrap up a convincing 9-0 shutout. It was, by far. Harvard's most complete effort this winter.
At Yale. the Crimson had dumped in a pair of goals in the opening minutes, then let the Elis play catch-up. Last Saturday, it used that strategy again-with even greater effect.
Goals Poured In
At 2:37, junior Daa DeMichele put the first shot by Blue goaler Mark Fitzsimmons the first of his three goals. At 6:18 senior Jack Turco added a second. At 8:26. it was Joe Cavanagh's turn. Then at 15:51, center George McManama contributed a fourth to send Harvard into the locker room with the game won after only twenty minutes of play. It was never in doubt.
The Crimson added five more in less than eighteen minutes during the second period, and rearranged Harvard's all-time scoring list in the process Cavanagh who tallied five points in the game, moved into a distant second behind present freshman coach Bill Cleary. The junior center now has 111, 84 behind Cleary with at least 25 more career games to get the rest.
Meanwhile, senior center George McManama's four points tied him for seventh spot with Joseph Kittredge, at 97 points. If McManama can tally six more next week, he will assume fourth spot behind Kent Parrot.
Tuesday night the Crimson plays Boston College in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Tournnement at McHugh Forum. The Eagies did not play this weekend
