Whitehead Grants To Ten Scholars

Ten American educators have been selected as Alfred North Whitehead Fellows for Advanced Study in Education and will have the opportunity to study at Harvard next year.

The Whitehead program, established in 1967 for five years, is funded by a $1 million grant from the Danforth Foundation. The newly appointed Fellows will receive funds from the University and will have the use of Harvard facilities during their year of independent study.

The Fellows will be given office space in Westengard House and may use Harvard libraries, audit classes, and consult Faculty and students while doing their research.

The program, presently headed by William G. Saltonstall, is named in honor of Alfred North Whitehead, a philosopher and mathematician who taught at Harvard between 1924 and 1936.

"The Whitehead Fellows will bring new and fresh points of view to those faculty and students in the Harvard community who are concerned about the future of Harvard education," said Saltonstall.

The ten Fellows are: William John Burns, director of the Peace Corps in India; Robert E. Dunn, principal of William H.
