Crimson Slopemen Land in Sixth Place, 35 Points Behind Top Scorer at Williams

The Harvard ski team, fourth at the end of the Alpine and cross country competition, did not compile enough points in the jumping to prevent successful bids by St. Lawrence and Vermont to surpass the Crimson point total at the Williams Carnival last Saturday.

Harvard finished sixth. less than seven points behind the Larries-the fifth place finisher, but 35 behind Dartmouth, the winner.

By failing to finish among the top five teams the ??p?men did not earn the right to participate in the NCAA Championships ?s a team. However, four Harvard ??? received invitations to the nationals on the basis of strong individual performances in the Williams meet and in previous ones.

"We blew the jumping." said Harvard coach Bill McCollom yesterday. "If we hadn't we would have finished among the top five." Although Chris Ferner captured a third in the jumping competition. John Boyle and Dick Compton finished well out of contention.

Ferner has now placed in one of the top three positions in each of the first three carnival events. He won at St. Lawrence and jumped to a third at Dartmouth. By finishing in the top five at the Williams meet. Ferner gained a berth in the NCAA field.

Alpine captain Larry Carter sprinted to a fourth in the special slalom race to pace the Alpine team. Alan Watson and Greg Murdock complemented Carter's performance with 11th and 20th place finishes in the slalom. McCollom called Murdock the most improved skier on the team and noted that "he hasn't fallen all year."

Despite being hampered by sickness. Nordic captain Steve Hinkle led the Crimson runners with a seventh in the cross country race.

Harvard's John Boyle, competing in all four events, totaled enough points to grab second place in the ski-meister competition.

Boyle and Carter will participate in the nationals because they finished in the top five in a competition this weekend, and Hinkle will be allowed to compete because of performances earlier this year.

The skiers, having rallied from an eighth place finish in the Dartmouth Carnival to capture sixth at the Williams Carnival, will travel to Middlebury next weekend for another carnival.
