In its first collegiate match in five weeks. Harvard's varsity squash team withstood a strong Williams challenge and extended its unbeaten streak to seven with a 6-3 victory over the Ephmen yesterday in Williamstown.
Set for Triumph
The triumph set the stage for this Saturday's meeting of the titans, the undefeated Crimson and Penn, with the Ivy League and National Intercollegiate titles at stake.
The top performance of the Williams match came from Fernando Gonzales at number three. Gonzales originally moved into the second slot after Fritz Hobbs' graduation, but he lost a challenge match to John Ince on Tuesday and slid back to the third spot.
Gonzales redirected his hostility yesterday against Williams' Jack McBroom and swept the match. 15-10, 15-10, 15-12. Entering the match. McBroom was undefeated in nine matches, including a three-game victory over Penn's Mason Gerhart, that Quaker's only loss.
Captain Larry Terrell and sophomore Alan Quasha also carried their matches in three games. Terrell set sophomore Ty Griflin down, 15-10, 15-12, 15-5. Quasha started his first varsity match of the season at number eight with a 15-12, 15-7, 15-7 triumph over Williams' Nick Travis.
Come From Behind
The Crimson came from behind at numbers six and seven to secure the victory. After dropping the opening game. ?-??, to Peter Kinn?y. Jaime Gonzales rushed back to triumph. 15-7, 15-12, 15-9. Paul Brown followed the same pattern against Chris Williamson-was edged out in the first game. 14-15, but won his match, 15-11, 15-8, 15-12. Ed Atwood padded the margin of victory, upending Mike Taylor in four games, 15-14, 15-7, 12-15, 15-4.
Harvard's Dave Fish and Williams' Dave Blackford provided the excitement of the day in a thrilling match that went the five-game limit. After rushing to within one game of victory. Fish faltered and fell, 15-5, 11-15, 15-17, 15-7, 15-7.
John Ince, jumping from fourth to second position on the team, ran into the Ephmen's Dave Johnson. The Williams' captain has only lost once this year, to Penn's Elliot Berry, and he added Ince to his list of victims, 18-14, 15-10, 15-6.
Sophomore Reggie Foster started at number nine in place of Pete Abrams. Abrams has suffered from back trouble all season and coach Barnaby decided to rest him for Saturday's contest. Foster carried his first game against Chris Warner, but lost the match, 8-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-13.
