Varsity Fencers Face Weak Trinity Today

After suffering the worst defeat in its history last weekend against N.Y.U., the varsity fencing team should have a breather this afternoon when it faces a weak squad from Trinity College in the LAB.

Coach Edo Marion expects the match to be so easy that he plans to play a number of B-team members. "Of course, if we should run into some trouble I'll put the first team in quickly," he said.

Larry Cetrulo, the Crimson's most consistent performer, will not be competing at all against the Trojans. Pat Pugliese and Scott Beckett, the regular sabermen behind Cetrulo, may see limited action, while Emil Godfrey, Robert Chew, and Mark Korashan will compete at saber for the first time this year.

At the epee, Marion said he will use Paul Viita, Richard Bargar, and Eliot Hurwitz. John Reitz and Mark Irvings, the Crimson's top epee men, may fence a bout each.

Although the first team foilers failed to win any bouts against N.Y.U., two of the first three foilers will get little chance today, Cliff Ruderman and Tom Keller may get in for a bout, but no more.

On Sunday, both fencers and Phil Rappaport participated in the New England Foil Championship held at M.I.T.

The team finished in a tie for third, 42 hours after the competition had started. The Crimson foilers fenced 18 bouts apiece. Keller won 14 and Ruderman won about 11.

"After a while it got so that you didn't remember how many bouts you had won or lost-although I think I won about half," Rappaport said after the marathon.

The performance by the foilers qualifies them for the nationals which will be held in New York during summer vacation.

While the varsity was in New York over the weekend, the freshman fencers slipped by an S.M.U. squad Saturday afternoon. The 14-13 win gave the freshman team its fifth victory. They have lost only one.

Captain Ronnie Bernstein swept his three bouts in the foil, and Dave Fichter took two in the same event.

Terry Valenzuela and Roger Carrick each won two at the saber. In the epee. Al Shaw copped two of his three bouts.

The freshmen will compete against Concord Carlisle High School on Wednesday afternoon. They will join the varsity team that evening at coach Marion's home for a psychological boost-a mild-mannered beer party in anticipation of the rugged Holy Cross Crusaders, the Crimson's opponents Thursday.
