Zinn Saunters Off To Suffolk Jail Term

By The ASSOCIATED Press

Boston University professor Howard Zinn begins a 61/2 day sentence at Suffolk County Jail Friday for refusing to pay a $20 fine.

The fine was imposed by Judge Harold W. Canavan in Suffolk Superior Court after Zinn's conviction on sauntering and loitering charges in connection with a demonstration at the Boston Army Base last May.

Zinn was to appear for sentencing Wednesday, but he did not show up and Canavan ordered him arrested.

Clerk Fred Bunai asked him Friday if he was "ready to pay the fine."

Zinn answered "no," and the clerk said: "Then the court orders you committed to the common jail."

The term will be served at the rate of $3 per day.
