The strength of Harvard's freshman swimmers once again appears to be in the freestyles. The Yardlings won all four individual freestyle events Tuesday afternoon to down Springfield, 54-41.
It was the first meet for the Crimson, which is likely to suffer most this season from lack of depth. Only 12 swimmers came out this year, as compared to 18 last winter. But coach Ben Merritt-feels that he has several top individuals who will be great assets for the varsity during the next few years.
Three Yardlings turned in double wins Tuesday for 30 of their team's points. Fred Mitchell won the 200-free in 1:48.17 and the 500-free in 5:03.87-both good times, especially considering the lack of pressure. Jeff Baird's wins were in the 50-free (23.02) and the 100-free (51.81).
The third double winner was Jim Vogler, who was first in the individual medley (2:17.79) and the breaststroke (2:21.45).
