The Harvard Advocate has agreed to sponsor a debate between the Center for International Affairs and a delegation from SDS and the University Action Group on the topic "Should the CFIA Exist?"
The CFIA refused to debate with SDS and UAG earlier this month on the grounds that there was no independent sponsor, agreed upon procedure, or impartial moderator to enforce the procedure. Michael Sobel '72 of SDS said that SDS and UAG had asked the Advocate to make such a proposal in hopes of meeting these conditions.
In letters delivered yesterday to Sobel and Robert R. Bowie, director of the CFIA, Jonathan Galassi '71, president of the Advocate, suggested the debate take place next Monday at a place
to be arranged, and that it consist of affirmative and negative speeches to be followed by questions from the floor "directed alternately to each side."
Sobel said yesterday, "SDS accepts the terms of the debate and welcomes the chance to smash the CFIA. The really important thing about the debate is the questions from the floor. What we're hoping for is real participation from the audience."
Bowie could not be reached for comment. His secretary said that a reply had been sent to the Advocate, but she refused to reveal the reply.
