A new restaurant will open today on the site of the old Hayes-Bickford Cafeteria, which prospered in the Square for 30 years.
The Bick, which was forced out of its old home last August after the landlord more than doubled the rent, stayed open until 3 a.m.
The new restaurant, to be called "As You Like It," will offer "a modest menu"-at rates slightly higher than those of the Bick-and will stay open only until 1 a.m. according to Dorothy Studdard, assistant proprietor.
Tavernesque
"This is not going to be a way-out place," Studdard said. "It'll have the atmosphere of an English tavern." Truly the Bick never had that.
As You Like It will also feature what Studdard called "a Shakesperean flavor." She said that waitresses will be dressed in 16th-century costumes of tight vests and pantaloons.
