Slight colds and injuries have plagued the varsity cross country team this week, but despite these misfortunes, Harvard should be able to top Brown in a dual meet this afternoon in Providence.
One main goal of the Crimson will be to rebound from last Saturday's demoralizing loss to Penn in New York. Harvard had been the favorite, but a total collapse by the Crimson enabled the Quakers to win easily. It was the end of Harvard's 34-meet winning streak.
"Feeling Mean"
"I feel mean," Harvard's Howie Foye said earlier in the week in reaction to the loss to Penn. He is one of the few healthy members of the team, and Brown's course is one of his favorites, so he may be among the top few finishers today.
Another harrier who may do significantly better today than he has recently is sophomore Mark Connolly, who had a particularly dismal day against Penn but who has had a good week of practice.
Under the Weather
Coach Bill McCurdy listed four men with colds-Bob Seals, Tom Spengler, John Quirk, and Tom New-and four with injuries-Nat Guild, Marshall Jones, Mike Koerner, and Dave Elliot.
"I really don't know what to expect," McCurdy said yesterday. "On the other hand, what the hell? I think we'll beat Brown anyhow."
One person to watch will be George Barker, who is recovering well from an injury and a two-week layoff. He was Harvard's third man last weekend. Seals's performance is also important since he was expected to be near the front against Penn, but finished seventh.
But Brown has more serious problems. "Again, I don't have quite as many boys as I'd like to have," coach Ivan Fuqua said a few weeks ago. Tim Cosgrove is likely to be the only Bruin able to stay with the Harvard harriers.
