Columbia has been trying to beat Princeton for 25 years, and last Saturday almost succeeded. The Lions fell, 24-22, but not before they had surprised a highly-rated Princeton team that was supposedly warming up for its game with Dartmouth on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the league, however, the results were more predictable as Yale, Dartmouth, and Cornell all won easily.
Although the Tigers escaped Columbia's rapidly improving sophomores, Harvard may not be as lucky this Saturday in New York. The Lion's sophomore quarter back, Don Jackson, should present a difficult test for the Crimson.
Another sophomore, Dick Jaurn, who chose Yale over Harvard after SDS occupied University Hall, looked impressive as. Yale smashed Colgate, 39-7. Jauron has 267 yards rushing in two games.
Combined with veterans halfback Don Martin and quarterback Joe Massey, Jauron leads an imposing Eli backfield. The Yale defense didn't do badly either, giving up -2 yards on the ground.
Ivy co-champion Dartmouth looked as powerful as its co-defenders, Yale and Princeton. The Indians crushed Holy Cross in a mismatch, 50-14.
The Indians' game with Princeton this Saturday will be the first big Ivy game of the season, Dartmouth will be seeking revenge for its 35-7 loss to Princeton last fall, a loss which spoiled an undefeated season and cost the Indians sole possession of the Ivy League championship.
Ed Marinaro stepped on the Lehigh defense for 260 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Cornell routed Lehigh 41-14. Marinaro now has over 400 yards rushing in two games.
In the battle for the Ivy League cellar, favored Brown fumbled away its claim to seventh place, losing to Penn, 17-9.
