'PolyArts' Program to Make Arts Accessible to Cambridge Residents

A newly formed organization known as "PolyArts" is attempting to utilize Boston's artistic and cultural resources in a series of programs for Cambridge residents.

PolyArts is, in the words of Executive Director J. Robert Gordon, "the first serious attempt to make art accessible to the people of the community."

PolyArts will sponsor programs in music, dance, drama, photography, painting, and other artistic fields. The exhibitious will be presented in parks, playgrounds, YMCA's, nursing and old age homes, and "anywhere we can get a group together," Gordon said.

"There is tremendous artistic talent in Metropolitan Boston." Gordon added, "but most of the artistic activity which takes place is either concentrated around the Universities, or priced beyond the budget of most people."

Gordon was the director of last summer's "Re/Creation '70" program, which brought more than 1100 artistic and cultural events to 250,000 people in the Boston-Cambridge area. He had hoped to extend Re/Creation '70 through the winter, but was fired by the program's board of directors.

Gordon was previously the founder of Boston's Summerthing program, and was the initial sponsor of the Sunday afternoon Cambridge Common rock concerts.

Programs planned for the fall and winter include a film festival, a series of Saturday morning art workshops for children at the YMCA, singing and drama performances at nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons.
