Hard Times Hit Radcliffe Sailors; M.I.T. Wins All But One Regatta

By Bradford B. Kopp

Radcliffe's National Championship sailing team, struggling through a rough Fall, has won only one regatta and has finished second or third behind M.I.T. in five other events.

"Although M.I.T. has been winning everything, we're really not upset," Coach Mike Horn said Thursday. "It has become a pattern for M.I.T. to do well in the Fall while we train new skippers. Then we clean up in the Spring and win the Nationals."

The Crimson will try to stop M.I.T. today and tomorrow in the largest and most important regatta of the season-the Man-Labs Trophy at M.I.T.

Radcliffe captain and Division A skipper, Lisa Fulweiler has been having trouble with M.I.T.'s Kathy Jones, who has been dominating Division A competition. "If you weigh each race by itself, Kathy and Lisa are pretty even," Horn said. "It's just that Lisa has had some bad luck and done sloppy sailing that has resulted in a lot of disqualification's."

In Division B, Barbie Grant and Toby Kellogg alternate at skipper for the Cliff and have been finishing behind M.I.T.'s Maria Buzzeppo, who seems to give the Engineers the depth they lacked last year.

Last weekend Radcliffe was second to M.I.T. in the Victorian Urn Regatta hosted by Radcliffe on the Charles. Fulweiler, with Janice Stroud as crew, fouled out of two races to assure Jones the victory in Division A. Buzzeppo fouled out of the first race and then took all firsts to snatch Division B from Grant and Kellogg, who took one first and six seconds.
