"The Democratic and Republican parties represent the ruling class, and not the majority of the people of this country," Peter Camejo told a meeting of the Harvard Young Socialist Alliance last night.
Camejo, the Socialist Workers' Party candidate for the United States Senate, said that radicals, students, and socialists must join together to build a widespread mass movement in the United States, independent of either the Democratic or Republican parties.
Camejo charged that the incumbent Senator, Edward M. Kennedy '54, had cast 26 votes in the Senate in favor of the Vietnam war, even though he claimed to be against the war.
He said that Kennedy is against legalized abortion, legalized marijuana, and an end to the draft. He also said that Kennedy had voted against equal rights for women.
Camejo said that he is running for the Senate to "educate" the people about socialism, and to make the voters of Massachusetts aware that there is an alternative candidate who opposes the war.
Camejo urged students who support him to work on behalf of the Student Mobilization Committee's October 31 anti-war demonstration.
