JV Soccer Beats Brown; To Face Team from SMU

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Riding the crest of an impressive 2-1 victory over a rugged Brown squad, the Harvard junior varsity soccer team faces its strongest challenge of the year here on Oct. 27.

Southern Massachusetts University is the only team to defeat the Crimson in five seasons of JV play, and the squad from New Bedford has done it twice. Both matches were decided by one goal, and both featured excellent play by SMU's fine Portuguese players.

Revenge

JV coach Seamus Malin and his players promise to be looking for their revenge in the rematch with SMU early next week.

Yesterday's contest against Brown upped the JV record to 3-0-1 on the season, and came on the strength of a particularly smooth team effort.

"We played a really sparkling first half." Malin commented, "and exceptionally good middle field performance gave us the control to build up our attack."

Malin called the play of midfield men Peter Kertes and Rob Woods "really first rate," and also cited fullback Ron McClain for playing "one of his finest games ever."

Harvard initiated scoring in the first period as halfback Rod Adams gave a perfect lead pass to Henry Sideropolous who scored the goal from six yards out.

In the second quarter, Kertes and Pauli Jarvenpas combined to feed Ron Padmore who drove in for the second tally.

In the second half, Brown took the play away from Harvard and narrowed the margin, but the Crimson held on through the fourth quarter for the win by dropping back an additional fullback to help on defense.
