The sixteenth running of the $100.000 added Woodward Stakes Saturday was listed simply as the seventh race. Arts and Letters won in a canter. At the eighth pole Baeza whispered in his ear and the colt responded by taking the lead away from the honest Nodouble.

Baeza has not revealed what magical incantations he recited to Arts and Letters at the eighth pole, but we imagine many jockeys will pay a dear tuition to learn the words.
