Dudley, Dunster, Eliot, Winthrop Name New Men as Senior Tutors

Four Harvard Houses have new Allston Burr Senior Tutors this year.

John W. Hutchinson, associate professor of Applied Mechanics, is now senior tutor at Dudley House; Robert A. Ferguson '64, a second-year GSAS student, at Dunster: Peter H. Wood '64, a third-year GSAS student, at Eliot; and Lance C. Buhl, lecturer in History, at Winthrop.

Senior tutors advise students in their House on course choices, graduate schools, fellowships, and careers. They also write letters of recommendation for their students. They constitute a majority of the Administrative Board, which is the College's top disciplinary group.

"The House Master is somewhat of a figurehead; the senior tutor is the guy that counts," Alwin M. Pappenheimer '29, Master of Dunster House, said yesterday."He is the closest to the students of those who run the House," Pappenheimer said.

Dudley

Hutchinson replaces Harry P. Kerr, associate professor of Public Speaking, who has been senior tutor at Dudley for five years. An associate member of Dudley's Senior Common Room for the last two years, Hutchinson has agreed to serve as senior tutor only for this semester. At 1960 graduate of Lehigh University, Hutchinson earned his M. A. and Ph. D. in Engineering at Harvard.

Dunster

Ferguson takes the place of Roger Rosenblatt, associate professor of English, who has been senior tutor at Dunster for two years. Rosenblatt, a member of the Committee of Fifteen, will continue hisassociation with the House as a non-resident tutor.

After graduating from Harvard in 1964, Ferguson spent one year as a Fulbright Scholar at the London School of Economics. He then entered the Harvard Law School, earning his L. L. D. in 1968. Ferguson is currently working for his Ph. D. in History of American Civilization at the GSAS.

Wood replaces Donald D. Bacon '62. a third-year student at the GSAS, who has served as Eliot's senior tutor for two years. Wood, who lived in Eliot as an undergraduate and was captain of the lacrosse team here, was assistant senior tutor at the House last year.

A former Rhodes Scholar and Harvard Prize Fellow. Wood is now a Ph. D. candidate in American history at the GSAS. His wife, Ann D. Wood, is a resident tutor at Eliot in English and in History and Literature.

Buhl takes the place of Daniel Horowitz, lecturer in History, who has been senior tutor at Winthrop for two years. Horowitz will now act as non-resident tutor at the House.

After graduating from Kent State University in 1961. Buhl earned his M. A. and Ph. D. in History here. Buhl, who served as assistant senior tutor at Dudley House last year, was chairman of the two mass meetings in Soldier's Field last April. A former Woodrow Wilson Follow, he has also been assistant director of the Office for Graduate and Career Plans and of the Harvard Summer School.

The new senior tutors were selected by the Masters of their House, with the approval of the Corporation.
